The 5 Levels of Communication

Not all conversation is the same. Communication runs along five levels — from a casual nod you give someone you barely know, up to the deep mutual disclosure you share with a life partner. Knowing which level you're at helps you understand what's missing and what you'd like more of.

The Five Levels

Level 1 — Ritual: A ritual can be a casual "Hello, how are you?" or even a simple nod you use to greet someone you barely know.

Level 2 — Extended Ritual: A casual exchange of pleasantries. Extended rituals are still superficial and don't require any emotional investment.

Level 3 — Surface: Surface conversations involve sharing concerns about work, problem-solving, discussing plans, or talking about hobbies, vacations, and politics.

Level 4 — Feelings About Self: Level four communication requires openness and empathic listening. You're sharing how you actually feel about your own life and experience.

Level 5 — Feelings About Each Other: In general, this is the kind of conversation you have with a best friend, family member, or life partner. It's mutual, vulnerable, and about the relationship itself.

Where Does Your Relationship Live?

Think honestly about a normal week — not your best day, not your worst. Estimate how much of your time together is spent at each level.

Our talk-time mix — estimate the % at each level (aim for about 100)

  • Level 1 — Ritual — % of talk time: ____
  • Level 2 — Extended Ritual — % of talk time: ____
  • Level 3 — Surface — % of talk time: ____
  • Level 4 — Feelings About Self — % of talk time: ____
  • Level 5 — Feelings About Each Other — % of talk time: ____

Total should come to about 100.

Example: It's common to find most talk time sits at Level 3 (logistics and problem-solving), with little at Levels 4–5. That's normal — noticing it is the whole point.

Looking at those numbers — what stands out? Is your time stacked at the lower levels?

Moving One Level Deeper

You don't need to live at Level 5 — most healthy conversation is a mix, and surface talk does real work. But many neurodiverse couples find their connection thins out because they rarely get past Level 3. The goal here is one deliberate step, not a transformation.

Which level would you like a little more of, and why?
