The Admin Pile

Unopened post, the appointment you haven't booked, the email you've reread ten times and not answered — the admin pile grows because each item carries a little dread, and dread makes starting harder. The pile isn't proof you're failing at adulthood. It's a predictable result of how your brain handles low-reward, high-friction tasks.

Empty the pile

Get it all out of your head and onto the page first — unsorted, no pressure to do any of it yet. Naming it shrinks it.

Every bit of admin hanging over me, dumped out

Sort by dread, not size

Rank a few by how much you're dreading them — that, more than importance, is usually what's keeping them stuck.

Triage

Row 1

  • Admin item: ____________________
  • Dread (low/med/high): ____________________
  • The tiniest first move: ____________________

Row 2

  • Admin item: ____________________
  • Dread (low/med/high): ____________________
  • The tiniest first move: ____________________

Row 3

  • Admin item: ____________________
  • Dread (low/med/high): ____________________
  • The tiniest first move: ____________________

Row 4

  • Admin item: ____________________
  • Dread (low/med/high): ____________________
  • The tiniest first move: ____________________

The scary call or email

Phone calls and formal emails are a common sticking point. A script you can read removes most of the in-the-moment load.

A script / opening line for the one I dread most

If-then to actually start

Tie one item to a cue already in your day so it doesn't depend on motivation.

Example: 'If it's 10am on Tuesday, then I'll make the one phone call before I let myself check my phone.'

My if-then for one item

Make it easier

  • [ ] Set a short, regular 'admin window' (15 min, same time weekly)
  • [ ] Do it alongside someone / on a call (body doubling)
  • [ ] Pair it with something good — a coffee, a show after
  • [ ] Allow myself to do just ONE and stop

One thing counts: You don't have to clear the pile today. One opened envelope, one booked appointment — that's the pile shrinking. Momentum is the win.
