You're Not Bad at People

If conversations have gone sideways your whole life and you've quietly concluded the problem is you, there's another explanation worth knowing. The 'double empathy problem' is the idea that misunderstandings between autistic and non-autistic people run both ways — it's a mutual mismatch, not a one-sided fault in you.

It's a gap, not a deficit: Autistic people often communicate easily and clearly with each other. The friction tends to show up across neurotypes — like two cultures misreading one another. The breakdown lives in the space between people, not inside you.

Re-read your history

Think of times you were told you were 'too blunt,' 'too much,' 'missed the cue,' or 'hard to read.' What if some of those were two-way mismatches rather than your failures?

A moment I've blamed myself for that might actually have been a mutual mismatch:

Where you actually flow

Now notice where communication feels easy. For a lot of autistic people, that's with other neurodivergent people.

  • [ ] Other autistic or neurodivergent people
  • [ ] A few close people who genuinely get me
  • [ ] Online communities
  • [ ] People who share my interests
  • [ ] No one yet — and that's okay

Who do I feel most like myself around, and what's different there?

What you were told vs. what's true

A lot of 'social skills' advice teaches you to perform neurotypical norms as if they're the only correct way to communicate. They aren't the only way — they're one dialect, and yours is valid too.

Example — What I was told was 'wrong' about how I communicate: I don't make enough small talk · The neutral truth: I prefer real information over filler — a valid style, not a flaw

Row 2

  • What I was told was 'wrong' about how I communicate: ____________________
  • The neutral truth: ____________________

Row 3

  • What I was told was 'wrong' about how I communicate: ____________________
  • The neutral truth: ____________________

Row 4

  • What I was told was 'wrong' about how I communicate: ____________________
  • The neutral truth: ____________________

One thing about my communication I'll stop apologising for:

Spend your social energy on purpose

If connection costs you more than it costs other people, you're allowed to be choosy about where it goes.

Relationships worth the energy — and ones I can let go of:

One low-stakes way I'll look for 'my people' this month:

The bridge is built from both sides: Double empathy means the work of understanding is shared — you don't have to do all the translating. You're allowed to look for people who meet you halfway, and to stop measuring yourself against a dialect that was never yours.
